““Wake up from your nightmare and come to my exhibition.” David Shrigley
“Are you? Awake? Sure? Nice! So come wander through our maze of ideas where imagination takes you beyond the ordinary. Refreshing, airy, curious, amusing, and maybe even uncomfortable. The twelve participants of Objects to Play invite you to become part of their world and make it your own. Embrace madness, go off track and explore. We shall meet half way.”
So opened Objects To Play – an art and design exhibition at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The work was interesting, but I was fascinated by the exhibition design. Out of a desire for people to linger, they had included seating and a coffee machine, which slowed my pace, even though I didn’t sit down for coffee. Blue and white curtains turned a square space into a maze to meander through. The fact they were slightly transparent meant you caught glimpses of things before you could quite get to them, leading you on and piquing your curiosity. The white walls gave the space that “gallery” feeling, but paint dripped from paintings down the white walls and onto a floor that looked like it had seen its fair share of creative experimentation.
The introduction promised the exhibition would be refreshing, airy, curious, amusing, and maybe even uncomfortable – and it was. I left feeling calm, but inspired and excited at the same time.
