Confessions of a Design Geek

out and about :: trend spotting at 100% design

Katie, September 28, 2010June 16, 2020

100% Design posed the question; “what is the future of design?” With that question in mind, at my last big LDF event for this year, I thought I’d try my hand at a little bit of trend spotting.

out and about :: pennies from heaven

Katie, September 27, 2010June 16, 2020

The highly magnetic brass metre-high ‘coin’ supposedly “fell to Earth from a giant’s palm.” The idea is that as people add pennies to the surface, it becomes textured copper and raises some money for Barnardo’s in the process.

out and about :: moquette for london

Katie, September 23, 2010June 16, 2020

“…taking images, be they architecture, paintings or nature, and distilling them right down to their simplest form until they became pattern”

here’s one I made earlier :: glass painting

Katie, September 22, 2010June 16, 2020

There really are a lot of geeky design people out there and one of the wonderful things about the London Design Festival is how it brings us all together.

out and about :: 1:1 architects build small spaces

Katie, August 22, 2010June 16, 2020

Architecture doesn’t have to be about straight lines and tesselating boxes; it can create rooms within rooms – little sanctuaries within busy homes, it can be organic and scultural and full of quirks and suprises.

creative spaces :: tessuto

Katie, August 13, 2010June 16, 2020

It was really interesting to realise just how much of an iterative process real-live design is. I was really impressed by how collaborative it was. Designers have to be flexible – they’re working towards a solution for their clients, which might end up being quite different from what they originally conceived.

out and about :: ernesto neto the edges of the world

Katie, July 18, 2010June 16, 2020

Ernesto Neto was a breath of fresh, seaside, summer air. It was a thoroughly inspirational installation that created a world within the Hayward and completely challenged the way you think about interior design.

out and about :: the new decor

Katie, July 11, 2010June 16, 2020

There were two pieces at The New Decor that really stood out as examples of how an artist’s mindset applied to design can create something truly magical.

thinking about :: design democracy

Katie, July 5, 2010June 16, 2020

For me, design democracy is sites like made.com and ponoko.com that give users involvement in designing the products they buy, it’s the public day at 100% Design, it’s furniture design courses at CSM, it lets me have not only access to all the glorious design out there, but also the chance to engage with it and even comment on it; to me, design democracy is this blog.

thinking about :: putney school of art and design

Katie, June 20, 2010June 16, 2020

It is a great honour to join this group of people, who gave their time and energy freely, and stood up for what they believed in – to ensure there was an art school there when I needed it; and they still do those things now. I sincerely hope their ongoing work, and my contribution, means it can be there for future generations too.

out and about :: elephant parade

Katie, June 13, 2010June 16, 2020

There is just one week left of elephant-spotting! Since May, over 250 brightly painted life-size elephants have been appearing all over London, in order to raise awareness of the plight of the endangered Asian elephant, which has dwindled in numbers by 90% in the last hundred years, and could be extinct in the next 30.
