A few from the archives this week… the 12 is another one from Falcon Enamelware – what a treasure trove of numbers! The 1 is from my trip to Cologne at the beginning of the year and from my basic grasp of the German language I’m guessing it indicates a 1st class waiting room – it was on a train station platform.
Finally another one from Cologne, the 20*C+M+B*08 was chalked over a door in a museum and there are two theories about what it might mean. It is tradition in Germany for the three wise men to visit and bless public buildings and people’s houses on Epiphany or DreiKoinigsFest, which is the 13th day after Christmas. The numbers represent the year, in this case 2008 and the letters either stand for the names of the three kings, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar or for “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” which means “Jesus save this house.” Any German readers got thoughts on which one is correct?
