It’s the last day of Clerkenwell Design Week 2013, and despite the lack of sunshine that has graced us with its presence every year so far, I’m having a lot of fun! I thought I’d squeeze in an extra ‘out and about’ post this week, to start bringing you my favourite finds as quickly as possible. These are my top picks from the House of Detention, a former underground Victorian prison.
I spotted the Transformed Stacking Vessels by Utopia and Utility in Milan, so it was lovely to see them tucked away on this little staircase to nowhere. The Vessels are symmetrical from the front, but when viewed from the side they transform into asymmetry.
I love a bit of concrete and am definitely sensing a trend towards its use in furniture and accessories. SAi Industries make super-thin concrete cladding put to elegant use in this GIO 50 bedside table.
I interviewed Liene Jakobsone back in April 2013 and I still love these somehow sheep-like stools.
I love Katy Goutefangea‘s delicate yet graphic designs – and when we got chatting, we realised that my first ever blog post included some of Katy’s hand printed wallpaper! In fact going to that launch instead of the pub with my colleagues one Friday night was how this blog came about!
Hush by Freya Sewell is a little pod made from a single piece of industrial wool felt, creating a quiet retreat within busy shared spaces, that’s cool when it’s warm outside and warm when it’s cold. At the moment there’s no lighting inside, to create a real cocoon, but Freya is working on a version with integrated lighting.
More concrete furniture, this time from Foreign Bear Studios. I like the angles concealed under the glass, and of course the yellow legs!
I think Donna Bates‘ limited edition Parlour Lights might be my favourite find so far. Inspired by the ‘receiving jars’ used to collect milk on the Irish dairy farm where she grew up, they are made using the original casts and reclaimed wood. Reminiscent of scientific lab equipment, they’re spot on for a geek like me.
And finally, it was lovely to meet Barnby & Day and Alex Mueller having interviewed them both in the run up to Clerkenwell Design Week. I loved Alex’s new light, a development on the the chairs he was showing in Milan.
