Psalt Design

Since being shortlisted for the confessions of a design geek Bursary, Psalt Design has gone from strength to strength, and will be appearing at Tent London in less than two weeks. I thought it was about time to catch up with them…

Psalt Design

What’s the most important thing to know about you?

We are Psalt Design. The P is silent.

How did you feel when you found out you’d been shortlisted for the confessions of a design geek bursary?

To be shortlisted was really great. It provided a fantastic opportunity for us to exhibit at a well established trade show and showcase our latest products to a new audience. One of the best things about showing at Home London was the chance to meet potential stockists and retailers. We had some great feedback from a number of visitors and it’s always nice to meet new designers for possible future collaborations and fun!

Psalt Design

What’s happened as a result?

We have got new products, we’re be continuing to get into retail and we’re exhibiting at Tent London!

What inspires your designs?

It’s difficult to pick out one specific thing that inspires us. In the past we have taken inspiration from craft and manufacturing processes, as we are always keen to make use of local manufacturers where possible.

Psalt Design

Talk me through your design process from initial idea to final product.

We have a lot of concept meetings fuelled by tea and biscuits! When we run out of biscuits, we select ideas to begin prototyping. Once we have a final prototype and vision, we source materials from suppliers and manufacturers before taking the final product to market, or in the case of the Atlas Bench, exhibiting at a trade show like HOME London!

Psalt Design

Describe a really good day and really bad day in the life of Psalt Design.

A really good day starts with cycling to the studio when the sun is shining… lunch in the courtyard at our studio followed by a trip to a local workshop to pick up a part we have had manufactured or prototyped.

It’s always good when we have a couple of Bubble Tank orders to process and ship out to customers.

What are you most proud of?

We are proud that there is a market for British design and that we have the freedom to design the products that we want to make.

Psalt Design

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking of becoming a designer?

Do good things!

What’s your favourite colour?!

5025 – Pearl Gentian Blue. One of the colours of our Myosotis notice boards.

photos of numbers :: 20, 43-80 & 10

December 20, 2013June 16, 2020

This article was published 13 yearsNot a particularly festive selection of numbers I’m afraid – in fact they’re quite industrial! I spotted the number 20 on the side of a particularly impressive Hoover-like machine lurking in the background at an Open Studio I visited in Eindhoven. 43-80 was on one…
