Morag Myerscough

I went to an event at the RCA called Talking Interiors with Morag Myerscough last week. It was really inspiring. I love Morag’s bold use of colour and her hands on approach – she often hand paints entire interiors with just a small team. I love that she’s kept her studio small. I love her use of words – the whole concept for the Movement Cafe in Greenwich came from one tweet by poet Lemn Sissay. I love her work for Whitechapel Children’s Hospital commissioned by Vital Arts, which turned a hospital corridor into a wonderland for the imagination. I love her humility; she talks as if her success has all happened by accident, she talks about clients ‘letting’ her do things as if she’s amazed. I love her imagination, her ability to make something from nothing, and her courage to challenge the status quo. I love the way she genuinely engages the people who will use the space in the design process. I love the fact that scale doesn’t frighten her, but permanence does. I love the fact that she can work on a budget, simply repainting walls and applying vinyl stickers to bring about a complete transformation. I love her energy. And most of all, I love her bright pink tights and peroxide bob. A super-inspiring evening, so thank you to the RCA and to Morag.

Here’s a short film about Morag for the Design Council…
