Emma Alington

I discovered Emma Alington‘s work at Pulse in May this year and was intrigued to find out more. I’m hoping to write about her making process (which involves blowing bubbles with a straw in a mixture of liquid clay and washing up liquid), but in the meantime, I’m excited to share a little tour of her stunning studio…

Emma says, “I just have the one wheel in the studio – it’s pretty old and like a tank but it’s still going strong.

“I’m lucky to have lots of natural light, so even though it’s a small space it always feels airy.

“My pin-board is like a ‘brain-food.’ I’m always adding new things.

“I have a few clipboards dotted around the studio walls. I use them to keep my records of firings, schedules, and all the important stuff which I would never deal with if it was left in a pile!

“I found the selection of broken ceramic pieces in my garden flowerbeds. Even though they’re all old and broken up, they have such interesting qualities. I keep them all in a row on the studio window sill for inspiration.”

I love how white and bright Emma’s studio feels giving it a sense of space and calm even though there’s quite a lot going on.
