What is it about wood? It seems to appeal to something deep within us. I recently interviewed East London institution ‘Barn the spoon’ – a man who makes his living from carving and selling wooden spoons – and he said, “making stuff out of wood with axes and knives is in our blood,” and I think he’s right. There’s a warmth to wood that speaks to our souls and thankfully there’s currently a real renaissance of making things by hand, so if you’re not particularly handy with an axe, you can at least surround yourself with things carefully crafted by people who are. I’ve been collecting pictures of just such things on my Wood Pinterest board – things made by Barn, by Hampson Woods and by Sebastian Cox, amongst many other very talented ‘woodies’ – see what you think.
