Cornwall inspiration

After a pretty hectic couple of months that included the preview of BRINK, publishing a 60 page review of the London Design Festival, making two films – one about Tent London and one about designjunction and everything else that LDF had to offer, followed in quick succession by a trip to Eindhoven for Dutch Design Week, I was due a holiday. And not just a half-hearted attempt at a holiday, but a complete switch off and on again, reboot, restore factory settings holiday. So I headed down to one of my favourite little corners of Cornwall, where I knew I had no chance getting a mobile signal let alone any wifi (as it turned out, even the landline was down!) and just sucked it all in. Here are a few of the best bits (from left to right, top to bottom)…

  • A rare moment of calm in a stormy fortnight on Praa Sands beach
  • Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture garden, tucked away in St Ives, is always such an inspiring space
  • This is some rainbow chard we bought from an honesty box in Perranuthnoe – I love the colours
  • I think I took this photo by accident, but I liked the grey and yellow!
  • Another honesty box in Newtown, where we bought the fattest leeks I’ve ever seen and some kale
  • Fishing nets and boats in Polperro where we spent an unplanned but very lovely evening
  • Hendra beach (actually just the other end of Praa Sands!)
  • Some gorgeous Piet Hein Eek style wood in the Shipwright Arms at Helford Passage
  • Proper Jamaica Inn country at Zennor – we nearly got blown off the cliff that day!
  • I finally made it to the fabulous Espressini in Falmouth, following Clare’s “explore” post
  • I loved this rather unusual memorial bench at Mullion Cove
  • You can’t get much more ‘back to your roots’ than this – a tiny hamlet in Cornwall where my family can trace its roots right back to the 1400s
  • I just thought these were pretty
  • I find the energy and experimentation of jazz really inspiring, and Flash Mob at the St Ives Jazz Club were no exception.

It was a fab trip and now I am back – refreshed, inspired and ready to do it all over again!

photos of numbers :: 20, 43-80 & 10

This article was published 13 yearsNot a particularly festive selection of numbers I’m afraid – in fact they’re quite industrial! I spotted the number 20 on the side of a particularly impressive Hoover-like machine lurking in the background at an Open Studio I visited in Eindhoven. 43-80 was on one…
