I was hurrying along Festival Terrace in the cold yesterday on my way to a very early morning meeting, when a whole host of numbers stopped me in my tracks! The Southbank Centre Shop Christmas window display was created by Ffion Harman, winner of a competition they ran in conjunction with IdeasTap

Created from 24 individual packing crates shaped to look like houses and each covered in bold vintage and contemporary fabrics, the installation will turn into a functioning calendar from 1st December when the boxes will be opened each day to reveal an artwork installation, gift idea or inspire some Christmas cheer. I can’t wait to see what’s inside!

Ffion said: “I love advent calendars; the way the excitement builds throughout December, so I wanted to use that excitement combined with lots of colours, prints and clean shapes to create a memorable display.”

Head of Retail & Buying, Southbank Centre (and confessions of a design geek bursary mentor!) Adam Thow said: “We are keen to do something a little out of the ordinary and to work with fledgling design talent so this project with Ideas Tap has been a dream collaboration for us. I’m delighted that Ffion has pulled it off and delivered a real alternative Christmas treat!”

The Southbank Advent Calendar is in situ from now until the end of December, so if you’re in London, go and a have a look – and don’t forget to use #photosofnumbers when you tweet / instagram your pics. (Thank you Yeshen Venema for these ones.)

Have a good weekend folks!
