London Design Festival in pictures

out and about :: london design festival in pictures (part three)

Another fabulous day at London Design Festival, and another quick picture post. I went to 100{ff546b69e23b1524d799f96c6ba7a638e1f677053b0a2a1568b05315fd5f8fc7} Design yesterday morning and spotted this gorgeous table lamp designed by David Irwin – the M Lamp is inspired by miners’ lamps and the North East of England’s mining heritage. (I have challenged David to come up with a follow-up inspired by the Cornish miners’ Davy lamp!) It is wireless and includes dimmed and emergency light settings, both activated by gently tapping the top. It reminds me a little of the Pixar Anglepoise – I love it. More from David Irwin to come – I think he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

After that I went over to designjunction to take part in a panel event called “Design for the Joy of Living” curated by Aidan Walker, alongside Max Fraser (Deputy Director of the London Design Festival and initiator of the Joy of Living Project for Maggie’s),Will Wilmshurst (architect for Richard Rogers on Maggie’s London) and Anthony Dickens (the product designer behind Tekio and the Joy of Living stand at designjunction amongst other things). It was a real honour to speak alongside such a distinguished panel and it was a really interesting event.

Finally, I took part in the Maggie’s Night Hike, walking 10 miles through the night from Leadenhall Market in East London to the Maggie’s Centre in Charing Cross Hospital in West London. It is run in conjunction with London Open House, so we had access to some incredible buildings, like City Hall, above. I had four hours sleep last night and now every part of my body now hurts, but it was worth every step. As a team, we raised over £1000 for Maggie’s, so I’m really proud.

Declaration of Interest: I am very privileged to work part time as a writer for Maggie’s, an incredible charity who provide emotional, practical and social support for people with cancer and their families and friends from stunning buildings set within the grounds of specialist cancer hospitals. These are my opinions; not those of Maggie’s.
