Troels Flensted’s Poured Collection is handmade in Copenhagen and created by combining a mineral powder and water-based acrylic polymer. Various coloured pigments are added to the mixture before it is poured into a mould. The marble-like effect is unique to each smooth, polished piece, giving the feel of ceramic, but the quality of a modern material mix.
Available in two sizes, and in eight different colours, each piece is unique in its appearance because the fluid method of production is difficult to predict as the mixture of acrylic polymer with coloured pigments is poured into the mould by hand. Described as a ‘frozen moment’, once set, each dish is sanded, polished, cleaned and sealed with a food-safe sealant to repel water and dirt.
Each simple, minimal form has a flat base and a shallow, curve top that can be used as a functional or decorative piece. As the marble-like pattern is part of the structure and form, it can still be seen on the outside when used to hold items inside.
“I find inspiration in the aesthetic and undiscovered possibilities deriving from combining material behaviours, colours and manufacturing processes,” explains Troels, “the work is often minimalistic in its shape, allowing the materials’ own characteristics to shine.”
Troels enjoys experimenting with various material behaviours, an approach which led to the development of the Poured Collection – in terms of their shape as well as the colour combinations. The swirls of colour and the organic nature of the patination contrasts against the clean, simple form and has allowed Troels to play with endless possibilities and extend the collection. Using a similar technique, he created a new series of tables in 2016.
What’s intriguing about Troels’ work is the way in which he has created a modern interpretation of ceramic design, playing on how materials adapt when used in a contemporary way. The possibilities are potentially endless in both scale and proportion as he develops his technique, expands his processes and experiments with new material combinations.
Troels Flensted studied at Central St Martins, and after graduating in 2014 he moved back to his native Denmark and founded his design studio in 2015. Having been awarded the Talent a la Carte Award at Maison & Objet Paris, he has also exhibited at several design fairs across Europe including 100{ff546b69e23b1524d799f96c6ba7a638e1f677053b0a2a1568b05315fd5f8fc7} Design, designjunction, Dutch Design Week and Stockholm Design Week.
